About the Center

The University of Minnesota National LTC Resource Center was founded in 1989 under operating grants from the United States Administration on Aging (AOA) to provide technical assistance, training, perform research and development, and disseminate information to assist States, Area Agencies on Aging, and the Aging Network to develop effective long-term care and long-term support systems.  See AOA Center History)

Under the direction of Rosalie A. Kane and with the support of research sponsors, the Center continues with research and development, policy analysis, and information dissemination in community care for seniors and people with disabilities. See Staff.  All research and policy analysis projects are broadly related to improving quality of life for older people.

The work of the Resource Center has been sponsored by many federal and State governmental agencies and private Foundations. See  Research Sponsors.  Signature areas of research include: physical and built environments; assisted living; culture change in nursing homes; small-house nursing homes and Green Houses ®; assessment and measurement of quality of life; rebalancing state long-term care systems towards community care; and regulation and quality assurance.
