Robert Kane, MD, currently holds an endowed chair in Long-term Care and Aging, directs the Center on Aging and the Minnesota Geriatric Education Center and co-directs University’s Clinical Outcomes Research Center. He also directs an AHRQ-funded Evidence-based Practice Center. He was the Dean of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health from 1985-1990. Dr. Kane has conducted numerous research studies on both the outcome of clinical care and the organization of care, with special attention to the care of older persons, especially those needing long-term care. He currently directs an Evidence-based Practice Center. He is the author or editor of more than 30 books and 350 journal articles and book chapters on health services research, geriatrics, and long-term care. He served on the World Health Organization’s Expert Committee on Aging. His current research addresses the outcomes of acute and long-term care, especially the effects of hospital and post-hospital care and better ways to deliver chronic care. He has received the President’s Award from the American Society on Aging and the Polisher Award from the Gerontological Society of America. He was elected to the University of Minnesota’s Academic Health Center’s Academy for Excellence in Health Research. He received the Enrico Greppi Prize from the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics. Based on the struggles to get adequate long-term care for their mother, he and his sister, Joan West, wrote It Shouldn’t Be This Way. He has formed a national advocacy group, Professionals with Personal Experience with Chronic Care (PPECC).
