| Dr. McBean is
currently a Professor in the Division of
Health Policy and Management. He is board
certified in Preventive Medicine and has
been active in public health programs,
teaching and research for more than 30
years. He has served as a Medical
Epidemiologist at the National Centers for
Disease Control, Atlanta GA, and the
Oganization Pour la Lutte Contra les Grandes
Endemies en Afrique Centrale, Yaounde,
Cameroun; Health Commissioner for the state
of Vermont; as well as a faculty member of
the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and
Public Health. In addition to the service
functions of these positions, he was active
in the study of vaccines used in children
(polio, measles, DTP), as well as adults.
He is the Principal Investigator for the
Research Data Assistance Center (ResDAC).
ResDAC is the focal point for information
for researchers pursuing studies using
Medicare and Medicaid administrative data.
It provides the expertise of faculty at
Minnesota and three other universities, as
well as others, who are knowledgeable and
experienced in the use of the Center for
Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS),
formerly the Health Care Financing
Administration (HCFA), administrative data
and the policies of the Medicare and
Medicaid programs. For the ten years prior
to 1994, Dr. McBean worked in the Office of
Research at HCFA using HCFA data to
demonstrate differences in the use of health
services among different race groups, and to
evaluate the use of health services,
including the use of the pneumonia vaccine,
among elderly Medicare beneficiaries. Dr.
McBean has also conducted studies on the
impact of influenza on the elderly, and he
was a major participant in the development
of HCFA’s initiatives in promoting and
monitoring the use of the influenza vaccine.
In addition, he is currently involved in
other studies focused on differences in the
use of health services by race, cancer,
diabetes epidemiology and treatment; and
infectious diseases of importance in the
elderly, such as pneumonia, influenza and
septicemia.
