Shelly Joseph-Kordell Scholarship Award
The Shelley Joseph-Kordell Award and Scholarship Ceremony
pays tribute to Shelley's life and contributions to the
senior community by drawing attention to aging-related
issues. The Award, established by Hennepin County,
honor dedicated professionals and agencies who work to
enhance the quality of life of seniors in our communities.
This year's Award winner is Twin Cities Little Brothers
Friends of the Elderly, a non-profit, volunteer-based
organization committed to relieving isolation and loneliness
among the elderly.
To support those passionate and committed individuals
entering this field, the Ceremony is also a fundraiser for
the Shelley Joseph-Kordell Scholarship. Proceeds from
sponsorship of the Ceremony support new students enrolling
in the School of Public Health or other graduate schools at
the University of Minnesota who have indicated a
commitment to working directly to improve the lives of older
people. This year's Scholarship recipient is Kristine
Talley. Now pursuing her PhD in gerontological
nursing, Ms. Talley plans to spend her career teaching
nurses how to advocate for their older clients in both
health care and political arenas, and developing
interventions to promote independent living.
Shelley Joseph-Kordell was a pioneer in geriatric care
management. More than 20 years ago she founded
"Estates in Transition/Rent a Daughter," making professional
advocacy for seniors her passion.
The Center on Aging takes great pride in perpetuating the
