| Dr. Rockwood is
an associate professor. His work in health
services research focuses on three primary
areas: Survey methods, Measurement, Outcomes
research and research design
His work in survey methods and design
spans a wide range of issues. This work
includes primary research in the evaluation
of error in survey methods, primarily
measurement error, including evaluation of
mode of administration, question order and
response category effects. His range of
experience in this area includes an
understanding of the issues associated with
administration of surveys in hidden or
difficult to reach populations, such as the
institutionalized and refugees. His work
over the past few years has
focused on community participatory research
with a focus on making culturally
appropriate adjustments to survey methods
when used in diverse ethnic communities.
In the area of measurement Dr. Rockwood
has contributed to the development of a
number of Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL)
scales. This includes the
Fecal Incontinence Quality of Life scale
and the
Fecal Incontinence Severity Index. In
addition he has work on instruments to
assess HRQoL in survivors of childhood
cancer and children with hemophilia.
The third area of concentration in Dr.
Rockwood’s work is outcomes research and
design. His contribution to this area is
bringing a sociological approach to the
study of outcomes. The sociological
background informs an understanding of field
research and quasi-experimental design as
well as conceptualization and measurement
issues associated with outcomes assessment.
Across all of these areas or work Dr.
Rockwood spans spanned multiple disciplinary
boundaries within academia as well as
working with community members. He has done
extensive work with both academic and
community based medical and public health
professionals, other social and life
scientists (psychology, economics, political
science, ecology and biology) and finally
directly with members of the community in
the design and development of research.
Dr. Rockwood has Bachelors of Science
degrees in Social Work and Sociology (minor
Political Science) from Utah State
University a Masters of Arts and Doctorate
of Philosophy in Sociology from Washington
State University (See
CV.) He also completed a post-doctoral
fellowship with Robert L. Kane at University
of Minnesota. He teaches two primary courses
in the Division of Health Policy and
Management.
