Excellence
Research excellence is the cornerstone of the
Health Policy and Management Division at the
University of Minnesota School of Public Health. The
HPM division is dedicated to expanding knowledge of
crucial health policy issues through rigorous
scientific inquiry and translating that knowledge
into practice through outstanding educational
programs and public outreach.
All HPM research is empirically based and policy
focused and grounded in the highest standards of
scientific rigor and academic integrity. The
well-established HPM reputation for intellectual
innovation and methodological excellence
consistently attracts major grants and contracts.
HPM has a portfolio of $48 million in project
funding. Faculty publish the results of their
research in numerous books, articles, chapters, and
reports annually. Their work appears regularly in
major peer-reviewed health services research
journals and in journals in many related fields,
such as medicine, aging, child development, and
public policy.
HPM Research Themes
As part of a school of public health at a
land-grant research university, the division focuses
foremost on issues germane to the efficient and
equitable distribution of health care resources for
populations.
Research themes and methods reflect the varied
disciplinary perspectives and interests of HPM's
faculty. With a core strength in health economics,
HPM's disciplinary mix also includes biostatistics,
epidemiology, geriatrics, law, psychology, public
policy, and sociology, among other fields.

What We Do With the Results
Knowledge-based policy analysis and outreach are
integral to HPM's land-grant mandate and public
health charter, and these activities in turn
invigorate the division's research and teaching
programs.
Through conferences and policy forums, in
newsletters and journal articles, at educational
seminars and legislative hearings, HPM's faculty are
actively engaged with those who shape health care
systems and implement health policies.
HPM's work often places faculty on the front
lines of pressing health policy issues in Minnesota
and nationally. Because of HPM's reputation for
intellectual and methodological excellence,
policymakers and health care agencies regularly turn
to HPM faculty for sound information, careful
analysis, and new ideas about managing health care
costs, ensuring quality, and achieving equitable
access to health resources.
